Forum on Sustainable Development of Aquatic Food: Reshaping the Value Chain, Empowering Pre-made Food

On 29 June, 2023, “Forum on Sustainable Development of Aquatic Food-Reshaping the Value Chain, Empowering Pre-made Food” was grandly held at Canton Fair (Guangzhou, China). The forum actively responds to the new strategy of developing pre-made food initiative by the state, a total of more than 200 participants have attended, including industrial governmental department, scientific research institutions, international organizations and enterprise representatives of aquatic feed, seedling, aquaculture, seafood, frozen product processing, R&D and production of pre-made food and media unit.

The forum is guided by Bureau of Agricultural and Rural Affairs of Guangzhou Municipality, organized by Guangdong Nutriera Group Co., Ltd, CFTF-CHINA FOOD TRADE FAIR, SeaFreShare Seafood Supply Chain Service (Guangzhou) Co., Ltd and Zhuhai Pre-made Aqua Food Research Center. Co-organized by Baiyang Investment Group, Inc, UPVN TRADING CO., LTD, CP Food (Hubei) Co., Ltd, Zhangzhou Hongyi Food Freezing Co., Ltd, College of Fisheries of Huazhong Agricultural University, School of Life Sciences Guangzhou University, Guangzhou Nutriera Biotechnology Co., Ltd and Zhuhai Dynaqua Biotechnology Co., Ltd. It is also supported by China-ASEAN Fisheries Resources Conservation and Exploitation project.

The forum has invited 6 industry big shots from supply chain, feed nutrition, scientific research and pre-made food processing to share the development progress, existing problems and the future trend of aquaculture pre-made food industry under the current background, and contribute wisdom and solutions to achieve high quality development of aquaculture pre-made food industry and create a trillion blue ocean market.

The economic development has brought changes in the consumption structure of animal protein, safe, nutritional, convenient and personalized consumer products have attracted more and more attention under the background of the rising of Generation Z. Overview of the entire aquatic value chain, aquaculture pre-made food are at the end of the chain and also the closest link to consumer demand. In the past, the feed production sector paid little attention to consumer demand. Now, aquatic products (including aquatic pre-made food) are increasingly becoming the main source of protein for people. Aquaculture industry enterprises must study consumer demand to guide the upgrading of the aquatic supply chain.

How do the changes in the consumption end promote the healthy and sustainable development of aquatic products? What are the key works in the industrial chain layout? What technologies are needed to be integrated for the whole industrial chain? Report title: Aquaesthetics for the Public

Prof. Huang Jie, Director General, Network of Aquaculture Centres in Asia-Pacific (NACA)

Prof. Huang Jie shared the concept of Aesthetics. The public is the ultimate consumer of aquatic products. All technical and economic inputs in the aquatic value chain ultimately need to serve public perception.  Aesthetics is a concept that summarizes the public's pursuit of a better material and spiritual life. It focuses on all forms of aesthetics and enjoyment that can be given to the public in the whole value chain from the development model of the aquatic industry to public consumption, emphasizing eco-friendliness, aquatic welfare, transparent safety, aquatic tourism, festivals, culture, arts, ornamentals, food, and healthcare. Aquaesthetics will make the public better understand, respect, accept, and praise the aquatic value chain and aquatic products. It can significantly drive the sustainable development of the aquatic industry through human culture.

Report title: Empowering pre-made aquatic food by advanced aquaculture breeding technology

Prof. Gao Jian, Duputy Dean, College of Fisheries of Huazhong Agricultural University

Aquatic products are important raw materials for pre-made food, and improving the quality of aquatic products can further enhance the quality of aquaculture pre-made food. How can we improve the quality of aquatic products to enable innovative development in pre-made food? Prof. Gao shares a forward-looking perspective: by using modern molecular biology techniques and approaches, we can significantly improve the texture and nutritional quality of aquatic products. This includes increasing the content of“golden brain”in aquatic products, improving meat yield, enhancing taste and appearance, and ultimately changing the quality of aquatic product supply and improving supply efficiency, thereby empowering the innovative development of aquaculture pre-made food.

Chen Yuwen, Chairman, Zhangzhou Hongyi Food Freezing Co., Ltd.

 Bullfrog, as one of the important aquatic product varieties in China, has vast market prospects in the field of pre-made food. Hongyi Group has been engaged in the complete industry chain of bullfrog for nearly 20 years, and in recent years, it has also been focusing on the development of bullfrog pre-made food. The company has invested in research and development to address issues in farming, processing, and other aspects. By processing bullfrogs into different forms of products, it aims to meet the diverse needs of consumers in various channels. As bullfrog pre-made food becomes more diversified, with traceability and data-driven dimensions, the capital operation model will be initiated, which will accelerate the growth rate of the bullfrog industry. This report provides a forward-looking analysis of the future development direction of the bullfrog industry, aiming to tap into the market of billion-dollar single product and open up new opportunities.

Report title: Mastacembelus armatus: Germplasm resources mining, new variety breeding and nutritional value research

Prof. Shu Hu, School of Life Sciences Guangzhou University

With the rapid development of aquaculture, people's demand for the quality of aquatic products has gradually increased, making the development of high-quality aquatic resources an inevitable requirement for the industry. The giant spiny eel has emerged as a new and high-quality aquaculture species in recent years, known for its delicious taste, nutritional richness, and high market value. This report presents the first systematic analysis of the current status of giant spiny eel germplasm resources in different river basins in South China at both morphological and molecular levels. It analyzes the growth regulation and reproductive biology of the giant spiny eel, overcomes the challenges of large-scale artificial breeding, and conducts work on the cultivation of new and excellent breeding strains of giant spiny eel. Based on the research achievements of our team this year, this report proposes new ideas for the cultivation and conservation utilization of giant spiny eel.

Report title: Developing and quality controlling of pre-made food

Dr. Hu Huihua, CP Food (Xiangyang) Co., Ltd.

 In recent years, the total production of aquatic products in China has been steadily increasing, providing a stable foundation for the development of the aquaculture pre-made food industry. Factors such as consumption upgrades and promotion have collectively stimulated the rapid development of the aquaculture pre-made food industry, indicating its enormous development potential. However, along with its rapid growth, the aquaculture pre-made food industry also faces certain challenges, including food safety risks, stability and consistency of quality, the ability to replicate taste, as well as issues of homogeneity and low added value. This report introduces the sub-categories of aquaculture pre-made food from a processing technology perspective, explores the development trends of the industry, and analyzes the processing pain points and proposed solutions for aquaculture pre-made food.
