On the 14th-15th August, the 9th of The Aquaculture Roundtable Series (TARS) was held in Bali, Indonesia, vice president of Nutriera Group Dr. Zhang Song led a team to attend it and gave a wonderful presentation.

In the past few years, the aquatic feed in Southeast Asian countries had encountered bottlenecks. Such as the international shrimp prices going down and fewer farmers for shrimp stocking, this brought a decline of the shrimp feed in Asia. The aquaculture diseases frequently occur in different countries and the farming costs increase sharply. More and more feed giants jump into some markets like Indonesia, and vicious competition comes. Where is the future of the aquafeed industry? It’s high time to hold a roundtable series with the theme Aquafeeds: Fit for the Future to find solutions.

The Aquaculture Roundtable meeting was hosted by AQUA CULTURE ASIA PACIFIC and enjoyed a high reputation in the Asia Pacific region and around the world. The delegates came from more than 20 countries. To ensure the effectiveness of the conference, the organizing committee limited the number of participants to 200, although the registration is very active.

The conference has five sub-themes, namely Industry Status and Challenges, Basic Nutrition Needs, New Alternatives to Fish Meal/Fish Oil, Disease and Health Regulation and Technology Innovation and Sustainability – Adapting to the Future. 17 guests who came from China, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, India, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and other countries shared the theme reports.

Dr. Zhang Song was giving a presentation Growing the aquafeed business in Asia

Technology Innovation and Sustainability – Adapting to the Future was the most concerned theme of this conference. Dr. Zhang Song was invited to share a report entitled Growing the aquafeed business in Asia. The report comprehensively analyzed the enormous potential of developing aquaculture in Asia and greatly boosted the confidence of delegates. By taking China's experience as an example, Dr. Zhang emphasized that under the current situation, Southeast Asian countries should pay close attention to the changing demands on end-use consumption, and accordingly adjust the products and business activities. A series of measures such as upgrading of feed products, optimization of breeding mode, and matching of animal protection products will help the company to break the game successfully. A large number of first-line data, detailed cases, and profound analysis were highly evaluated by the participants.

During the Q&A session, the participants asked questions and explored the topics such as functional feed, pangasius flesh whiten technology, and optimization of culture mode, etc. Dr. Zhang Song made detailed analysis and explanation during the session.

In the breakout roundtable discussing-sessions, the meeting was divided into three sections, and the discussion directions were respectively ‘Shrimp feeds’, ‘Fresh water fish feeds’ and ‘Marine fish feeds’. Closely around the theme of the conference, the ideas of different countries have achieved further exchanges and integration. The idea of ‘optimizing the culture mode and developing the functional feed’ mentioned by Dr. Zhang Song in the report has become a hot topic in the discussion of each group. Everyone supplemented and diverged based on their own environment and characteristics, and the industrial transformation led by feed enterprises is imminent.

Southeast Asia has a large population base, fast economic growth, and natural conditions such as climate and water resources are very suitable for aquaculture. Despite the headwinds, the overall growth trend is undoubtedly. As long as we pay close attention to the market trend and customer demand, with the timely adjustment we will usher in a new round of rapid development in the short term.
